March3rdof the Lunar Year,
a Festival for She people
She ethnic minority group is one of the 56 ethnic groups in China. Over the past 1,000 years, She people have migrated from Guangdong province to provinces like Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Anhui. For now, over 90% She people live in Fujian and Zhejiang, others scattered in Jiangxi, Guangdong and Anhui.
March3rdof the lunar year marks a traditional festival for She people. On this day, the She people in Shuangjiang village (in Xindeng Town, Fuyang) will hold a grand ceremony to celebrate it by dancing and singing joyously. Shuangjiang village is the closest She village to the core area of Hangzhou.
Villagers tend to entertain visitors by offering specials such as “black rice” and “Shanha liquor”.
The above-mentioned “black rice” does not refer to a special kind of rice. It’s actually made of sticky rice by immersing it in unique black juice from leaves (Vaccinium bracteatum thunb). After hours of soaking, the rice appears black, which can be steamed in a wooden bucket. She people have long kept the custom to tint sticky rice on March3rdof the lunar year.
“Shanha liquor” is another special in the traditional food culture of She people, handed down from generation to generation. After preparing quality sticky rice and a well-chosen liquor yeast, She people usually brew the liquor with clear water from mountain springs. In this way, the liquor will taste more sweet and tender.
“Shanha” in She dialect means “guests living in mountains”, reflecting the hospitality of She people. On momentous occasions, every household of She people will make “Shanha liquor”.
Besides having the two specials, She people will also sing its folk songs, braid colorful ribbons and perform bamboo pole dance on March3rd.
Bamboo pole dance is a special art form, known for flexibility and swiftness. Bamboo pole holders will squat down and move poles in a rhythmic way. When two poles separate, dancers should jump into the gap. Before the poles cross, dancers should withdraw in time. During the jumps in and out, dancers have to perform moves elegantly and naturally.
Shuangjiang village is also the hometown of Luo Yin, a famous poet in the Tang Dynasty. When you visit the village, you can not only enjoy the cuisines and customs of She people, but also resonate with Luo Yin’s beautiful poems.
