Wenzhou: A Tale of Two Languages. Hello everyone, this is Appreciate Wenzhou, Voice of Kean. Welcome to our program.

双语赏读, 品味温州。听众朋友们大家好,这里是朗读温州肯恩广播室。欢迎收听我们今天的节目。

I’m Chloe from Wenzhou-Kean University.

我是来自温州肯恩大学的占依诺。

Wenzhou-Kean University is a Chinese-American jointly established higher education institution. Every course of Wenzhou-Kean University is taught in English. Learning English well is a necessary skill for every WKUer. Now I’d like to teach you a commonly used English word in this program. I hope this word will be useful, and that you will come to love English the way I do.

温州肯恩大学是一所中美合办的大学。温肯的每一门课程都由英文授课,学好英语是每一位温肯儿的必备技能。我们希望节目的播出对听众朋友们的英文学习有一定的帮助,也希望你我能够更加热爱英语这门语言。

在今天的节目中,我们将教给大家“Claim”这个单词。C-L-A-I-M, claim。它既可以作为动词也可以作为名词。做动词时,我们最常使用的它的一个释义是“宣称、声称、断言”。作为名词时,“claim”通常被译为“声明”。

Let me tell you two examples of the word. “He claims that he was not given a fair hearing.” In this sentence, "claim" is used as a verb, which means “to say that something is true although it has not been proved and other people may not believe it”. Another example of this word is “The singer has denied the magzine’s claim that she is leaving the band”. We can obviously find that the "claim" in this sentence is a noun which means “a statement that something is true although it has not been proved and other people may not agree with or believe it”.

今天我们还将给大家介绍“claim”的一个特殊用法,不知道大家有没有听过这句话——“And having perhaps the better claim”,在这句话中“claim”被翻译为“理由”。这句话出自美国诗人罗伯特·弗罗斯特创作的文学作品《一条未走的路》。罗伯特·弗罗斯特是20世纪最受欢迎的美国诗人之一。在这首深邃的哲理诗中他竭力展现了现实生活中人们处在十字路口时难以抉择的心情。

Today we're going to introduce a special use of the word "claim". In the phrase "And having perhaps the better claim", where "claim" is translated as "reason". This sentence comes from the American poet Robert Frost's literary work “The Road Not Taken”. Robert frost was one of the most popular American poets of the 20th century. In this profound philosophical poem, he tries to show the tangled feelings of people at the crossroads in real life.

Now, let’s enjoy The Road Not Taken - Robert Frost.

朗读文本:

下面让我们欣赏《一条未走的路》罗伯特·弗罗斯特。

The Road Not Taken - Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Thank you for listening.  Until next time.
